Tortuosity of porous media: Image analysis and physical simulation

چکیده

Abstract Tortuosity is widely used as a critical parameter to predict transport properties of porous media, such rocks and soils. But unlike other standard microstructural properties, the concept tortuosity vague with multiple definitions various evaluation methods introduced in different contexts. Hydraulic, electrical, diffusional, thermal tortuosities are defined describe processes while geometrical characterize morphological property microstructures. In particular, rapid development microscopy imaging techniques has made digital microstructures media increasingly accessible, from which physical can be evaluated using image analysis numerical simulation methods. These differently differ greatly value, but many works literature, they interchangeably. To address this situation, we systematically examine geometrical, hydraulic, viewpoints definition method. For same medium, visible discrepancies found tortuosities, depending on specific method adopted. This observation makes it questionable directly use substitute for common practice literature. Thus, correlations between further analyzed, also takes into account influence both size resolution. From correlation analysis, phenomenological relations established, so that latter accurately predicted by former much cheaper evaluate

Tortuosity-porosity relation in porous media flow.

We study numerically the tortuosity-porosity relation in a microscopic model of a porous medium arranged as a collection of freely overlapping squares. It is demonstrated that the finite-size, slow relaxation and discretization errors, which were ignored in previous studies, may cause significant underestimation of tortuosity. The simple tortuosity calculation method proposed here eliminates th...

Hydraulic tortuosity in arbitrary porous media flow.

Tortuosity (T) is a parameter describing an average elongation of fluid streamlines in a porous medium as compared to free flow. In this paper several methods of calculating this quantity from lengths of individual streamlines are compared and their weak and strong features are discussed. An alternative method is proposed, which enables one to calculate T directly from the fluid velocity field,...

Simulation of Foam Transport in Porous Media

FOllin is an excellent fluid for achieving mobility control of gas in porous media. Practical application of fOllins for EOR processes, however requires a predictive model of foam displacement. Further, quantitative information on fOllin-flow behavior at reservoir flow rates llild pressures is required as input to llily field-scale modeling. An experimental and mechanistic-modeling study is rep...
